Korea University research team visited KBFSC for carbon quantification research

Korea University (KU) research team is conducting a forest carbon quantification study at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre (KBFSC) from June, 2013 to June, 2016. This study is funded by the Korea Forest Service. KU team is led by Prof. Yowhan Son (Lab. of Ecosystem Ecology, Division of Environmental Science and Ecological Engineering) and Prof. Woo-Kyun Lee (Lab of GIS/RS, Division of Environmental Science and Ecological Engineering). They are collaborating with UBD research team led by Dr. Kamariah Abu Salim (Biology Program, Faculty of Science). This collaboration is a practical action to promote research partnerships between two universities.

Tropical forests account large amounts of terrestrial carbon storage and play an important role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. In particular, it is necessary to apply remote sensing technology to quantify carbon storage in tropical forests because of its vast area and limited accessibility. Therefore, KU research team combines point-based field measurements and landscape-scale estimations using LiDAR for forest carbon quantification. This study aims to develop highly accurate and cost-effective techniques on quantification of forest carbon and investigate the carbon cycling mechanism for lowland mixed dipterocarp forests at the KBFSC.

Prof. Son, his two graduate students (Dongho Lee and Sohye Lee) and Prof. Lee visited Brunei Darussalam in December, 2013. They went to Forest Department Brunei Darussalam to discuss about the National Forest Inventory and shared Brunei forest resources data. They also visited the Institute of Biodiversity & Environmental Research (IBER) to view weather data of Belalong. And then they stayed at the KBFSC for following field works from 24th December, 2013 through 4th January, 2014.

  • Measuring various carbon pools (dead wood, litter, herbaceous vegetation, and soil)
  • Collecting carbon pool samples to analyze carbon contents
  • Installing litter traps and litter bags to measure carbon flux through litterfall
  • Downloading weather data from sensors they installed last August

All field works are successfully carried out through organized efforts with Dr. Kamariah and three field assistants. Many officials of UBD also gave them a lot of help. KU research team will come again to the KBFSC for performing the ongoing research.
